Memorial Day: It's a National Holiday, a long weekend that kicks off the summer vacation season. Many of us get the day off. How will you spend your long weekend?

We are suggesting you put aside some of your time this weekend to remember and honor those who died serving this country. If you are able and available, consider joining about a thousand of your neighbors. They will be at Biloxi National Cemetery Saturday morning at 8 o'clock.

Mississippi is prone to severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, and the American Red Cross urges residents to take steps now to stay safer when severe weather threatens.
 
“After recent severe weather and tornadoes across several states, this is the time to stop what you’re doing and make sure you and your family are prepared," said Don Stephens, emergency services director. “Create a disaster preparedness plan now before our community is threatened by high winds, hail, lightning and excessive rainfall.”

George Regional Health Fair Appeals to People of all Ages

The 4th Annual Community Health Fair drew a crowd this weekend who took advantage of more than a dozen free health screenings. The screenings with the longest lines this year were the skin cancer screenings provided by Dr. David B. Crump of Community Surgical Center and the Peripheral Vascular Disease screenings provided by Cardiology Associates. This year’s fair featured fun activities for children including balloon art provided by Reverend Dick Trosclair and face painting by the George Regional Hospital candy stripers.

Voting held today for primary run-offs

SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX)- Today in South Mississippi there are 12 primary runoffs for the board of alderman or city council races.

If you voted in the primary on May 7, you must cast your ballot under the same party in today's runoff. If you did not vote in the primary races and there is a runoff in your ward today, you can cast your vote. The General Election is June 4.

From 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. polls will be open today.

Nearly 2,000 students graduated from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College during the 2012-2013 school year.  The annual commencement ceremony was held on May 9 at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi.

Search is on for accused deadbeat dad

Search is on for accused deadbeat dad

The George County Sheriff's Department is searching for Alonzo T. Lawrence, 23, of Lucedale.

According to George County Sheriff Dean Howell, a bench warrant has been issued for Lawrence for failure to pay child support.

Howell said a judge wants him to spend 60 days in jail once he is arrested. The judge also entered Lawrence's purge amount of $3,195 to be paid before he can be released from jail.
