George Co. swimming accident victim dies in hospital | Community Spirit

A Jones County man died Monday night following a swimming accident in the Basin Community of George County.

According to George County Sheriff's spokesperson Shonna Pierce, 20-year-old Whitehead was swimming with a church group in the Pascagoula River. He was reportedly attempting to tie a rope swing when a strong current took him under for an extended period of time.

Whitehead was pulled from the water. George County Sheriff's deputy Jason Pharez and a bystander immediately started chest compressions on Whitehead.

"They did everything they could to help him until the ambulance arrived," Sgt. Pat Dueitt said.

Whitehead was transported to USA Medical Center in Mobile, AL for treatment.
