GC officials urge residents to stay river alert

George County emergency management officials are urging residents along the Chickasawhay, Leaf, and Pascagoula Rivers to stay alert for the next 72 hours. After today’s heavy rains, the National Weather Service is forecasting rivers could reach flood stages as early as Saturday Morning (March 24).

The Pascagoula River at Merrill was at 11.2 feet at 2 p.m. this afternoon. NWS predict the river will be at 19.0 feet by Friday and at 22.0 feet by Saturday.

“If this prediction holds, we’ll see an eight foot jump in river stages in 24 hours.

MS Forestry Commission visited Benndale Elementary

The MS Forestry Commission made an informative stop at Benndale Elementary School Feb. 10.

The speakers were Donna Hicks, Debbie Welford, Eugene Cooper, and Lisa Landon spoke to fifth grade students about their work with the MS Forestry Commission.

The entire student body was given Loblolly Pine Trees to take home and plant in honor of Arbor Day.

Rocky Creek Elementary:

A joint effort of the MS Forestry Commission, Natural Resources Conservation Soil & Water Service, and Mississippi State University Extension Service to present a forestry program to all the 5th grade students in the George County Schools was held in honor of Arbor Day on Friday, February 10, at Rocky Creek School. 

Speakers at the program were Donna Hicks-NRCS Soil & Water, Debbie Welford & Eugene Cooper-MS Forestry Commission and Lisa Landon, George County 4H Agent.  Mrs.

February is National Beef Month.  Did you know that 97% of America’s cattle farms and ranches are family run?  That’s right!  We have Mississippi Farm Families providing safe beef not only for your family but ours as well.

Improvements in beef production technology have helped the beef industry use fewer resources to feed more people.  In Mississippi in 2011 the value of the beef industry was $155 million.  

With over 14,500 cattle farms in Mississippi there is a lot of delicious and nutritious beef for you to try in your family meals. 

MDEQ promotes a "green" holiday season

Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality - (JACKSON,   Miss.)  --  MDEQ  encourages  Mississippians  to  remember  the environment  this  holiday  season  through  waste  reduction,  reuse,  and recycling practices to "green up" the holiday season. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the amount of household trash increases by 25  percent  ?  or 25 million tons nationally?

Daylight savings time works as reminder for checking fire detectors

Hopefully you enjoyed an extra hour of sleep Sunday. Firefighters say people can sleep at lot safer at night if they take the time to make sure the batteries in their smoke detectors are working. Daylight savings time is a perfect reminder to replace the batteries.

Firefighters say as important as having functioning smoke detectors is where the devices are located in the house.

"The smoke is what kills you mainly. Nine times out of ten, it's the smoke that gets them. If you're asleep no matter what time of the day or night it is. It doesn't matter.
