Rocky Creek Elementary:
A joint effort of the MS Forestry Commission, Natural Resources Conservation Soil & Water Service, and Mississippi State University Extension Service to present a forestry program to all the 5th grade students in the George County Schools was held in honor of Arbor Day on Friday, February 10, at Rocky Creek School.
Speakers at the program were Donna Hicks-NRCS Soil & Water, Debbie Welford & Eugene Cooper-MS Forestry Commission and Lisa Landon, George County 4H Agent. Mrs. Landon showed the students what appeared to be a wooden stick, but the stick was red oak and can be used to blow bubbles.
It is amazing how cells of red oak are like a bundle of straws. Mr. Cooper explained to the students how to plant their trees, and told students the history of Arbor Day. The youth were able to name many products that trees provide us with and products we use every day.
The students were given loblolly pine trees to take home and plant. The students also participated in an Arbor Day poster contest. 5th grade teachers are: Mrs. Marsha Marshall, Mrs. Phyllis Robbins, and Mrs. Traci Harlan.
