Application deadline approaching to apply for $50,000 in literacy grants to MS nonprofits

Verizon Wireless, MISSISSIPPI – The September 1 deadline is quickly approaching for Mississippi nonprofits to apply for a total of $50,000 in grants to support literacy programs from the Verizon Foundation.

Grants will support projects that:
• Enhance GED and/or adult literacy programs.
• Support pre-k and/or k-12 literacy programs.
• Use resources from the Thinkfinity Literacy Network for programs for families and adult learners.
• Improve literacy skills for a particular group or individuals.
• Target under-resourced communities.

Libraries Closed for Labor Day

Jackson-George Regional Library - All branches of the Jackson-George Regional Library System will be closed Monday, September 5, for the Labor Day holiday. The branches, located in the communities of East Central, Gautier, Lucedale, Moss Point, Ocean Springs, Pascagoula, St. Martin, and Vancleave, will reopen Tuesday, September 6, at regular hours.

Singing River Electric grant awarded to Lucedale Public Library

Singing River Electric:

LUCEDALE, MS – Singing River Electric Power Association recently awarded a Neighbors Helping Neighbors Community Grant totaling nearly $2,100 to the Lucedale–George County Public Library. 

Lucedale Public Library will use grant funds to purchase and install two wall-mounted signs for the library’s exterior to help identify the building.

Libraries to close for July 4th holiday

The eight branches of the Jackson-George Regional Library System will be closed Monday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day.

The branches located in the communities of East Central, Gautier, Lucedale, Moss Point, Ocean Springs, Pascagoula, St. Martin and Vancleave, will reopen Tuesday, July 5, at regular hours.

Library system offers read-down fines program for adults during April

If you owe a library fine for overdue books or library materials Jackson-George Regional Library System is offering a special program for adults who may owe library fines for overdue books or library materials.

Lucedale upgrades recreational complex

Slabs are being poured, canope's are being constructed over bleachers, and according to Mayor Doug Lee another baseball team could start playing at the soon-to-be eight bleacher, four baseball field complex.

According to the mayor the project cost the city under $18,000 to construct.

"City employees are constructing the canopies and leveling concrete," Mayor Lee said.

Each of the eight bleacher's will have over head canopies.

George county courthouse is getting renovated

George county courthouse is getting renovated

Workers are busy remodeling the courtroom which takes up the second and third floors. The courthouse in Lucedale was built in the early 1900s. Officials say $355,00 is going into painting, replacing the air condition and heating system, new seating, and more.

George County residents will soon be able to visit a much improved courthouse.
