MEMA Monitoring Tropical Depression in the Gulf of Mexico

Missississippi Emergency Management Agency:

PEARL The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is keeping a close eye on tropical depression 13 in the Gulf of Mexico and is urging all residents along the coast to do the same. A Tropical storm warning has been issued for Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties.

The National Weather Service is forecasting the possibility of more than 12 inches of rain falling along the Mississippi coast over the next few days.

Governor declares State of Emergency for South Mississippi

Governor Haley Barbour declared a State of Emergency for the South Mississippi counties that will be impacted by severe tropical weather in the Gulf of Mexico.

The counties affected include: George, Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, Marion, Pearl River and Stone counties and other affected areas.

By Brad Kessie, News Director -  BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - WLOX meteorologists are keeping a close eye on the Gulf of Mexico.  There's a low pressure system over the gulf that forecasters say could become a tropical depression by the weekend.  However, it's too soon to tell exactly how it will affect Gulf Coast residents and businesses.

For now a coastal flood watch is posted for south Mississippi.  This system will likely bring higher than normal tides and high winds along the coast.

MEMA Director Urges Preparedness on Hurricane Katrina Anniversary

PEARL – Six years ago Hurricane Katrina devastated the Mississippi Gulf Coast with 135 mph winds and up to 30 foot storm surges that killed 238 people. Today the recovery and rebuilding process continues for many Mississippians. Mississippi Emergency Management Agency Director Mike Womack is asking residents to make sure they are prepared for the next storm as they remember Katrina.

“The first thing people need is a plan to know if they will need to evacuate their home and where they will go,” said Womack.  “Saving lives is our top priority.

Salvation army offers relief from heat

Many people throughout South Mississippi are coping with the effects of the Summer heat. Some worse than others.

The Salvation Army Mississippi Gulf Coast Area Command is trying to help keep residents cool. As part of its continued effort to keep residents cool and prevent heat related deaths they started their Fan-tastic program about a month ago.

The non-profit is still offering fans to qualified residents of Harrison, Hancock, Pearl River, Stone, George and Jackson Counties.

Emily is no more, now onto a heat wave

WLOX Meteorolgist Mike Reader said tropical storm Emiy is no more. The poorly organized tropical storm formed Monday, August 1 in the Carribbean.

"The storm broke up over the high terrain of Hispinola. With no circulation the system is now a tropical wave. There is no mention of regeneration, but the wave will be moving into the Bahamas this weekend and bears watching," Reader said.

Tropical Storm Don forms off Cancun coast

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Tropical Storm Don has formed off the Yucatan Peninsula.  The storm is at 22.2N 87.0 W.  Sustained winds are 40 mph.  And it's moving to the WNW at 12 mph. The National Hurricane Center believes watches or warnings may be necessary for the Texas coastline either tonight or Thursday.
